Getting started and backups
How do I install Ownsteps?
Check the Ownsteps product page for store availability; if it shows the launch list, join it for an email when the extension is available. Once the store link is available, install Ownsteps in Chrome and open its toolbar icon. If you already have the unpacked folder, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and select ownsteps/extension.
How do I record and export my first guide?
Open the HTTP or HTTPS page you want to document, click the Ownsteps toolbar icon and choose Start recording. Grant access to that site, then click through your task at a steady pace. Choose Stop and edit, review the screenshots and step text, and edit or redact anything private. In Export, choose Web page (.html) or Markdown and images (.zip); Word and PDF need Pro.
Where are my guides stored, and how do I back them up?
Guides, step text and screenshots are stored in IndexedDB for Ownsteps in this browser profile on this computer. Open Your guides and export each guide you need to keep; HTML includes screenshots, and the Markdown ZIP includes text and image files. Copy these exports to your usual backup location before uninstalling the extension, deleting the profile or moving computers. Treat them as document copies, rather than a way to restore editable guides into the extension.
What can I do on the free plan?
The free plan keeps up to three guides and includes redaction, HTML and Markdown exports. To make room, export a guide you need to keep, then remove it with Delete this guide in Your guides. Pro adds unlimited guides, Word and PDF, and export branding.
Pro, licenses and refunds
How do I buy Pro, and where is my key?
Ownsteps Pro is $29 USD once for the current major version and its 1.x updates, with no subscription. In the editor, choose Get Pro, then Buy Pro to open Creem checkout when purchasing is available. After a completed, verified payment, the return page shows your license key; it is also in your Creem receipt email. Keep the key and receipt somewhere safe, and contact support if checkout is unavailable or the key has not arrived.
How do automatic and manual activation work?
If Ownsteps is installed in the checkout browser, it reads the key on the payment return page and tries to activate automatically. For manual activation, open Your guides, choose Get Pro, paste the key from the return page or receipt email, then choose Activate. Allow access to ingijy.com if Chrome asks, and confirm that Pro is active. If automatic activation fails, reload the complete payment return link or use the key manually; another purchase is not needed.
What does the three-browser limit mean?
One license is for one person and can be active in up to three browsers. Each installation is activated separately, so another browser or profile needs the same key entered there. Ownsteps and Ownchats have separate licenses; use the key for the product you bought.
How do I move Pro to a new computer?
Back up your guides as exported documents first. While online on the old computer, open the editor, click Pro and choose Remove from this browser to release that installation. Install Ownsteps on the new computer and activate the same key. If the old computer is unavailable or you have reached the activation limit, email support with your purchase email and the error shown.
Can I use Pro offline?
Recording, editing and file generation happen locally, so those tasks do not require our server. First activation needs a connection, and an active license is checked about every seven days when used. If the service cannot be reached, Pro remains available for up to 30 days from the last successful validation; an explicitly inactive, expired or revoked license can stop Pro sooner. After that offline window, reconnect and submit the same key through Activate to retry validation of the existing installation.
What should I do if activation fails?
License service is unreachable. Check your connection and extension permission.
calls for checking connectivity and the extension permission for ingijy.com; Enter a valid license key.
calls for pasting the complete product key without spaces inside it; License activation was not confirmed.
means Pro has not been confirmed for this installation. Retry after checking the connection, or email support; failed activation does not delete local guides, and a temporary service failure preserves only the remaining offline window for an existing activation without extending it.
Can I get a refund?
You can request a full refund within 14 days of purchase, with no reason required. Read the refund policy and email [email protected] with your purchase email, or reply to your Creem receipt. Refunds go to the original payment method through Creem.
Recording and export troubleshooting
Why does a screenshot need replacement?
The editor warning is This screenshot may not match the step. Retake it from the page, or replace it with an image.
, and an export may show Screenshot not available for this step.
. These mean the capture was missing or could not be confirmed as matching the action. Stop recording, open the intended page state and choose Retake, or use Replace with a PNG, JPEG or WebP image. Review and redact the replacement before sharing; replacement removes the old click marker.
Why do fast clicks leave screenshots missing?
Chrome limits extension screenshots to two per second. Capture quota occupied at pointerdown.
means the screenshot slot was already occupied, while Capture did not start before the action.
means the capture could not start in time. Slow down, keep the recording tab visible and retake or replace affected images after stopping. These warnings do not mean a matching screenshot was captured.
Which pages cannot be recorded, and how do I fix access?
Open an HTTP or HTTPS page to record.
means you need a regular web page rather than a browser page or local file. Chrome prevents recording on restricted pages such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store, even though the store uses HTTPS. Site access was not granted.
means you need to start again and allow access to the site. For another site, stop the current recording and start a new one there so Chrome can request access.
Why can I not retake a screenshot?
Stop recording before replacing a screenshot.
means you must stop the active recording first. If you see Click the Ownsteps toolbar icon on the page you want to capture, then return here and try again.
, open the intended page, click its Ownsteps toolbar icon, return to the editor and choose Retake. Keep that page active in its browser window and allow site access if asked. If Chrome still blocks capture, use Replace with an image you have reviewed.
Why does a PDF with non-Latin text open a print page?
In version 1.0.1 and later, text such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic or emoji uses Chrome printing so browser fonts can render it. Choose PDF document, wait for images and fonts to load, then click Print / Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF as the destination. Supported Latin text downloads a PDF directly instead. If you see This print preview is no longer available. Export the guide again from Ownsteps.
, return to the editor and export again.
Why can I not edit or export while recording?
Recording in progress. Stop recording to edit or export this guide.
means this is the guide currently being recorded. Choose Stop and edit before changing or exporting it. Pausing suspends recording clicks but leaves the guide locked; stopping releases it.
Privacy and sharing
Does Ownsteps read what I type into fields?
Ownsteps does not read what you type into fields, skips password fields and blacks out input boxes in screenshots. It can record which field you interacted with, using its label for the step. Text a page shows elsewhere, such as a preview or search suggestion, can still appear in screenshots or step text. Review every screenshot, title and description, use Redact on private image areas and edit private step text before sharing. Blacking out a selection permanently changes those image pixels; see the privacy policy for more information.
Does Ownsteps upload my guides?
Guides and screenshots are stored locally, and exports are made on your computer. Pro activation, validation about once a week and removal from a browser contact our license service using your key and a random installation identifier. Guide content is not sent with those requests. There is no Ownsteps account, analytics or tracking.
