How to export a ChatGPT conversation to Word (.docx)
Reviewed .
A Word document is useful when you want to edit an answer, add comments, or hand a conversation to someone who works in Office. You can make one manually without a chat exporter. The main work is preserving the right messages and checking the formatting after you paste.
Decide whether you need a transcript or a finished document. A transcript should keep your prompts, the answers, and their order. A report can use selected passages, but label it as edited so readers do not mistake it for the original exchange.
Start with the manual copy method
Use a word processor you already have. Word can save .docx files; a free editor with Word-format support is another option. Copying from ChatGPT does not itself create a Word file.
- Open the ChatGPT conversation and find the first message you want to keep. Select its text and copy it.
- Create a blank document in your editor. Paste the text, then add a heading identifying the speaker, such as You or ChatGPT.
- Repeat for each prompt and answer in order. Copy code separately when a large selection loses its line breaks.
- Add the conversation title and a date. Apply heading styles, repair tables, and check links against the original chat.
- Save the document in Word document (.docx) format. Reopen the saved file and compare its first and last messages with the conversation.
Try a small paste first. Keeping source formatting may bring in unwanted fonts and backgrounds. Pasting plain text avoids those styles but removes tables, emphasis, and hyperlinks. Choose the approach that leaves you less cleanup rather than assuming one paste option is always better.
Use the official archive for older conversations
For account history, use the profile menu, Settings, Data controls, Export data, Export, then Confirm export. This downloads account data rather than a ready-made .docx. See OpenAI's data export instructions.
You can open a compatible archive in the free chat export viewer, find a conversation, and download HTML. Open that HTML locally, copy the relevant text into your editor, and save a Word document. This route avoids manually hunting through the account archive, although the final document still needs inspection.
Keep code, tables and sources usable
Use a monospace font for code and preserve indentation. Turn off automatic substitutions if your editor changes straight quotes or hyphens. A code block that looks attractive can still fail when copied into a terminal, so compare important commands character by character.
For tables, check that column headings still match the data underneath. A wide table may need landscape orientation or narrower columns. Keep source URLs next to the relevant answer instead of leaving only a numbered citation with no destination.
Images and uploaded files need separate attention. Pasted text may contain only an attachment name. Keep the original file beside the document if you need its contents, and describe any missing image instead of treating a blank space as a complete export.
Check long chats before sharing
A browser page can load older messages only as you scroll. Selecting everything visible can therefore miss the beginning. For a manual transcript, work in sections and compare several messages from the beginning, middle, and end.
If you edited a prompt or regenerated an answer, check which branch you are copying. An alternate answer is not necessarily part of the conversation currently displayed. Keep an untouched transcript separately when your edited document needs to be traceable.
Ownchats as a document option
Ownchats is a Chrome extension for ChatGPT and Claude. Its Word output uses headings, lists, tables, hyperlinks, and monospace code. When available, open the intended chat, choose Word in the extension, review the message count and warnings, then open the downloaded .docx.
The count compares messages found in the source with messages written; it does not prove every attachment was available. ChatGPT images may appear as placeholders. Math is preserved as LaTeX text in version 1, rather than guaranteed native Word equations.
The free allowance is five Word or PDF exports total, shared between those formats. Markdown and HTML exports are unlimited. Pro removes the Word/PDF limit and adds message selection and archive features. The product page currently offers a Chrome Web Store launch notification; do not assume installation is already available.
If your final deliverable needs fixed pages, read the PDF guide. Keep the editable Word original so you can correct a formatting problem without starting again.
