Guides for saving ChatGPT and Claude conversations
Reviewed .
These guides explain how to keep ChatGPT and Claude conversations as files you can read, edit, and check. Each starts with a manual or official method, then explains where Ownchats may help. Choose a guide by the copy you need: a working document, a fixed page layout, a note, or an account archive.
A successful download is only the first check. Long conversations, regenerated answers, wide tables, and missing attachments can all change what appears in the saved result. The guides include practical ways to compare the file with the source before you rely on it.
Start with a free method
For one short exchange, copy the prompt and answer into an editor and label both speakers. For an offline page layout, try browser printing and inspect its preview. For account history, use the platform's official export and keep the original ZIP privately.
ChatGPT's export route is in Settings, Data controls, Export data; Claude's is in Settings, Privacy, Export data. Account and workspace rules differ. Follow OpenAI's export help or Claude's export help rather than assuming every account has the same controls.
If you already have a compatible ZIP or conversations.json, the free chat export viewer lets you search, read, and save individual conversations as Markdown or HTML. It reads locally in your browser and does not require the Ownchats extension.
Choose a guide
Export a ChatGPT conversation to Word
Use this guide when you need an editable .docx for comments, revisions, or a document handoff. It starts with copying into an editor, then covers speaker headings, code indentation, tables, and sources. It also explains the difference between a transcript and a rewritten report.
Word is a good working format when you expect revisions. Keep the original conversation or archive available, since a polished document can hide where a paragraph came from or what was removed during editing.
Export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF
Choose PDF for offline reading or a file with a stable page layout. The guide starts with browser printing, explains a document-based alternative, and gives checks for long chats and Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and emoji.
Check text selection as well as appearance. A readable image of a page is different from searchable text, and a print preview can look tidy while omitting older messages. Reopen the final file before sending it.
Export a Claude conversation to Markdown
This guide covers a manual .md file, Claude's official archive, and a free viewer workflow. It then explains copying the file into an Obsidian vault or importing it into Notion. Check headings, code fences, links, and attachments after the move.
Markdown gives you portable text rather than a fixed visual layout. Your notes app may render it differently from Claude. Importing into a cloud workspace also changes where the copy is stored, so check the destination and sharing settings.
Compare all ways to save a ChatGPT conversation
Start here if you are unsure which route to use. The guide compares copying, share links, official account export, browser PDF, and Ownchats in a pros and cons table. It separates access through a hosted link from ownership of an offline file.
Review share-link privacy before distributing anything. OpenAI's sharing help explains why personal links and managed-workspace links have different audiences and update behavior.
Understand the ChatGPT export ZIP
Read this guide if you downloaded your history and found JSON instead of a document. It explains how to inspect the archive, identify conversation files, understand message branches, and read the data with the local viewer.
Archive contents can change. Preserve your original, work with copies, and read warnings about unsupported content. Neither a parser nor a message count can recover an attachment that the archive does not contain.
Check the saved result
Compare the first prompt, a message in the middle, and the last answer. Confirm the branch after any edits or regenerations. Inspect tables, important commands, source links, and a paragraph in every language used. Keep attached originals separately when the transcript contains only filenames.
Name files with the topic and date, and label shortened or edited copies. A local file is a snapshot; it does not follow later changes in the live chat. These habits help regardless of the export method.
When Ownchats is an option
Ownchats is designed for ChatGPT and Claude in Chrome, with Word, PDF, Markdown, and HTML output. It builds documents locally and checks exported message counts. PDF uses Chrome's print dialog, and ChatGPT images may be placeholders. Gemini is not supported in version 1.
Markdown and HTML are unlimited for free; Word and PDF share five free exports total. Pro adds message selection and archive features. The product page currently offers a launch waitlist, so check availability before depending on an extension workflow.
Questions before you start
Do I need an extension to save a chat?
No. Manual copying, browser printing, and official account exports are starting points. The free viewer can read compatible archives and save individual Markdown or HTML files.
Does a matching message count prove the file is complete?
No. It checks messages found against messages written. Inspect warnings and the actual result for missing images, unavailable attachments, and formatting problems.
